Science

Curious Minds Begin Here — Science

Every child is a natural-born scientist. They wonder. They explore. They ask “Why?” a hundred times a day. At Flagstaff Christian Preschool, we take that spark of curiosity and help it grow through joyful, hands-on science experiences that inspire lifelong discovery.

Our science curriculum is built around the idea that children learn best by doing—observing, predicting, experimenting, and communicating their ideas. Whether it’s watching a seed sprout or mixing colors, every experience in our classroom helps children understand the world around them and how to think like scientists.

Science That's Active, Engaging, and Purposeful

  • Child-centered: Rooted in each child’s questions and interests

  • Activity-driven: Full of hands-on exploration and playful investigation

  • Integrated: Woven into daily routines, story time, and spontaneous moments

Children learn how to:

  • Ask thoughtful questions

  • Make observations using their senses

  • Predict outcomes and test ideas

  • Classify and compare

  • Communicate their discoveries with confidence

What Is the Scientific Method?

Even our youngest learners begin exploring the scientific method, introduced in a fun and age-appropriate way:

  1. Ask a question

  2. Make a guess (predict)

  3. Test it out

  4. Observe what happens

  5. Talk about the results

Just like using polite manners, using this thinking process becomes a natural habit at our preschool

Learning Science Through Stories

Our science journey often begins with books! We use literature to develop critical thinking and introduce scientific principles. For example:

  • Fortunately by Renny Charlip helps introduce the idea of asking “What’s next?” and making predictions

  • Science is Simple by Peggy Ashbrook is a guiding resource for our fun and engaging classroom experiments

Through stories, we encourage children to make predictions, test outcomes, and compare expectations with reality—just like real scientists do.

Everyday Science Experiences

Children will explore:

  • Nature and seasons

  • Weather and water

  • Living things (plants, animals, insects)

  • Magnetism, light, and shadows

  • Sinking, floating, and simple chemistry

  • How things grow and change
